1.写出下列划线短语的意思。

It’s about some of the worst environmental problems we’re facing today.

Global warming, for example, is a major problem caused by greenhouse gases.

It may lead to extreme weather events: droughts, heatwaves and so on.

Some call for the application of modern technology, and others a change of lifestyle.

Last weekend, I took part in a forest clean-up activity.

Joe divided us into two groups: one group cleaned up the north side of the forest, and the other group cleaned up the south side of the forest.

2.词汇重难点

(1)come up with: 想到,提出(无被动语态和进行时态)

原文定位:All of them come up with creative ideas on how to solve these problems.

【提示】 come up with及物动词短语,人作主语;

  come up不及物动词短语,物作主语,不用于被动语态。

(2) call for: 要求;需要

原文定位:Some call for the application of modern technology, and others a change of lifestyle.

 

 

(3) application   n.应用,运用;申请

原文定位:He had planned to borrow a book on environmental protection, but he didn’t.

【拓展】动词hope, expect, think, mind, mean, want, suppose等用过去完成时,表示未实现的愿望、打算和意图。

We had hoped to be able to come and see you.  我们本来希望能来看看你。

I had never thought that you were content to help me.   我从未想过你愿意帮我。

 

3.长难句分析

(1) It’s about some of the worst environmental problems we’re facing today.

分析:省略关系代词 that 的定语从句,修饰 some of the worst environmental problems。先行词在定语从句中作动词face 的宾语,故引导定语从句的关系词 that 可以省略。

 

(2) I wish we could also do something to help.

分析:wish 后接宾语从句,可以表示不能或难以实现的愿望。此时根据从句中动作发生的时间我们可以将其分为以下几种情况:

a.表示与现在事实相反的情况时,从句谓语动词用过去式(be多用 were)

I wish my parents were in favour of my decision at the moment.

此刻要是父母同意我的决定就好了。

 

b.表示与将来事实相反的情况时,从句谓语动词用“couldwould/should/might+动词原形

I wish l could pay off my debt in a week. 我希望一周后能还清债务。

 

c.表示与过去事实相反的情况时,从句用过去完成时。

I wish you had made an apology to Mary. 我希望你已经向玛丽道过歉了。

 

(3) What about making a brochure about environmental problems?

What about doing sth? = How about doing sth?

做某事怎么样?表示委婉的建议。

 

(4) What if nobody goes? 如果没有人去该怎么办?

= What will happen if…?

What if…? 常用来提出假设、建议、邀请、要求等,意为倘若……将会怎样,后面常跟一般现在时,有时根据语境也可以跟虚拟语气。类似句型有:

What for…? 为了什么目的?

So what? 那又怎么样?

How come? 怎么会这样?

What about…?/ How about…? ……怎么样?

 

(5) We worked for several hours and we were happy to see that the forest looked cleaner than it had looked before.

我们工作了几个小时,看到森林看上去比之前更干净了,我们很开心。
分析:动词不定式作原因状语;解释happy的原因。
表示喜、怒、哀、乐等的形容词作表语时,后可接动词不定式(短语)作原因状语,用以说明产生这种情绪的原因。常用于这类结构的形容词有surprised, sorry, disappointed, excited, glad, happy, anxious, delighted, pleased等。
  He was astonished to hear the terrible news. 听到这个坏消息他十分震惊。
  We were surprised to know that the meetings were held secretly.

我们很惊讶地得知会议被秘密召开了。
I’ll be very glad to accept invitation to your party.

我将非常愉快地接受去你的聚会的邀请。
